NABAWAN: The parents of some 300 SMK Sepulut students are demanding action to resolve the water problem in the school so that their children need not have to bathe and wash their clothes in the river.

For the last three to four years, these students who stay at the school hostel have had to go to a nearby river to take a bath and wash their clothes due to severe water shortage.

The SMK Sepulut has a student population of 500.

Several parents claiming to speak on behalf of the rest, said yesterday they were deeply concerned and hoped the authorities would act immediately to resolve the problem which had prevailed for so long.

They pointed out that the situation was tough for the girl students.

“It is also unsafe for them to leave the hostel especially in the evening,” the parents added.

One of the students who only wished to be called Boy told New Sabah Times that he and many others have no choice but to take their bath and wash their clothes in the river everyday.

And, the New Sabah Times also learnt that some of the SMK Sepulut teachers chose to live in Keningau instead of staying at the staff quarters because of this water problem.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the school explained that the problem would be resolved when repair work on the hostel’s dining hall, damaged during a recent landslide, was completed.

He said a sum of RM6 million has been allocated for the repair work as well as to fix the water problem.
